Half Round Gutters
Half round gutters are also a good choice for some homes. Half round gutters look just like they sound: a round tube cut in half. But since this is the classic gutter style used for centuries in Europe and America, half-round gutters are de rigueur for many prestige custom homes. Usually when you see a stunning copper gutter system, it will feature the classic half-round profile. Thus half-round gutters are primarily used in custom homes and, nationally, account for about 10 percent of the gutter market.
Yet half-round gutters are now such a prestige item that manufacturers have developed roll-forming machines to make half-round gutters out of aluminum. Thus the half-round style is migrating into the mid-range housing market as an "upgrade" item. With their classic simplicity, the half-round profile goes with virtually any style of home architecture. And in contrast to copper half-rounds that are installed with semicircular wraparound hangers, the aluminum variety is slightly altered so that installers can use the same standard hangers they use for ordinary K-style gutters.
As for the performance of half-round gutters, there is some debate. Some say that a rounded profile won't hold as much water as the more squared-off K-style gutter. But others believe that, while a K-style gutter the water spreads to the outer edges of the squared-off trough, as a rounded profile directs water to the bottom point of the trough and thus improves flow.
